Monday, January 8
USA: Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Rejects DOEs Grid Resiliency Proposal- Secretary Perry’s proposal favored power plants able to store 90 days fuel supply on site, "unlike renewable energy" (sic) or natural gas plants.

China: Regions with Rich Geothermal Resources to Replace Coal Heating "as Soon as Possible" - China will boost shallow geothermal energy heating in smog-prone Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and nearby regions, the state planner said in a statement on Monday, in a bid to curb coal use during winter as part of Beijing's fight against air pollution.

USA, California: Vacancy as Executive Director of Geothermal Resources Council - GRC is recruiting to fill the vacant Executive Director role. The successful applicant must be an experienced, confident, team-oriented leader.

Argentina: Exploration About to Begin at Socompa Volcanic Geothermal Project - Exploration will begin in the second half of January, for the Socompa Volcanic Geothermal Project, within the agreement made with the provincial state company Salta Energy and Mining Resources (REMSA).

United Kingdom: Scottish and Danish Companies Team Up to Develop Geothermal Heat Projects in Great Britain - Danish company Geoop has signed a memorandum of understanding with Townrock Energy of Aberdeen, Scotland to jointly promote green energy, develop projects and support initiatives in Britain regarding geothermal energy.

Wednesday, January 10
USA, Nevada: New Production Well to be Drilled at San Emidio Geothermal Facility - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has approved a proposal submitted by US Geothermal Nevada LLC to drill a new geothermal production well at the San Emidio Geothermal Facility.

Argentina: Exploration for Geothermal Resources in Andean Province Begins - National and Provincial organizations have agreed to cooperate in the development of mining activities in the western Argentine province of Mendoza.

USA, Nevada: State Utility Looking for Up to Additional 330 MW Renewable Energy - NV Energy is seeking up to 330 megawatts of additional long-term renewable energy to advance its commitment to clean energy for Nevada.

Thursday, January 11
USA: Update on Projects from the Geothermal Technologies Office - The GTO gave an update to the geothermal community presented by GTO Director Dr. Susan Hamm with an introduction by Dr. Timothy Unruh, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Power.

Kenya: Workshop on Geothermal Financing and Risk Mitigation in East Africa (IRENA) - 31 January - 2 February, Nairobi, Kenya. The workshop will aim to identify the main barriers that African countries face for financing geothermal projects and disseminate best practices and innovative models to finance operations including geothermal risk mitigation mechanisms.

Indonesia: Drilling of Wells at 86 MW Rantau Dedap Geothermal Project to Begin Mid-Year - PT Supreme Energy Rantau Dedap said it will start drilling geothermal wells in Rantau Dedap in Muara Enim, South Sumatera in the middle of this year.

Friday, January 12
Iceland: Two Turbines at HellisheiĆ°i Power Plant Down Because of Fire - The extent of the damage is not yet clear, nor when the station can return back to full capacity. Nobody was in danger and the station was evacuated immediately when the fire was detected.

Netherlands: Another Dutch Town Shows Interest in Geothermal Energy - The Amersfoort city council talked about geothermal energy in a roundtable discussion on Tuesday evening.
