Costa Rica's President Halts Geothermal Projects in National Parks (Power Engineering International)

Costa Rica's President Luis Guillermo SolĂ­s has said he will not support the construction of geothermal power plants in the country's national parks.

The President's statement came in response to a draft law which would allow the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) to undertake project development.

With an installed capacity of 200 MW, geothermal power is the country's second energy source. Promoters of geothermal projects in national parks claim that the nation's production will be increased up to 350 MW if new plants could be built in national parks.

National parks and protected areas cover 20 per cent of Costa Rica.
