Barrick's Geothermal JV to Go Ahead on 20 MW Argentine Plant in 2014 (BNAmericas)

The geothermal joint venture between Barrick Gold, Argentina's San Juan provincial power utility EPSE and Argentine firm Geotermia Andina plans to finalize feasibility studies on a 20 MWe project by this time next year, according to provincial press reports.

The project, planned for the Despoblados area of the Valle del Cura valley, is expected to sign a PPA with Barrick's Veladero gold mine some 12km away, which currently consumes 17 MWe and requires 30Ml/y of diesel trucking in to power the mine, reported Barrick Argentine corporate affairs manager Julio Claudeville.

Barrick is also eyeing five other points with similar geothermal characteristics in the area to potentially power its US$8.5bn Pascua Lama gold-silver project some 10km from Veladero on the Chile-Argentina border.
